Jim Engel retired from Cal Fire after 31 years of suppressing and investigating fires throughout California. Jim, is the owner/principal investigator of Engel Fire Investigations LLC, established in 2019. Jim’s experience with Cal Fire includes conducting wildland origin and cause investigations, complex wildfire investigations, and serial arson investigations. Jim was the lead investigator/Incident Commander on numerous investigations. Jim worked with other team members to establish the FI-210 (wildland fire origin and cause determination) and FI-310 (wildland fire investigation case development) training programs within Cal Fire. Jim established cooperative relationships with other wildland fire agencies to instruct investigation classes in Virginia, Texas, Nevada, Utah, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Alaska. Jim received Cal Fire’s Superior Accomplishment Awards for his work investigating the Esperanza Fire (2006) and the development of the Cal Fire Law Enforcement Officer Field Training Program. Jim is also an active member of the National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s (NWCG) Wildland Fire Investigation Subcommittee, formerly holding positions of Chair and Co-Chair. He is a qualified Wildland Fire Investigator and Wildland Fire Investigation Team Member. Jim has testified as an expert witness in regard to wildland fire origin and cause and serial arson in California. Jim is a licensed California Private Investigator.
